How my English developed

As one of the most important carriers of information, English has become the most
widely used language in all areas of human life and is currently the only language in the
history of the world that has the status of a global language and a world language.

Growing up in China, I was unfamiliar with English because it was just an ordinary
subject for me. I studied English only to pass exams because I did not need to communicate
through English at all in my life. The most English communication was only in the classroom.
For me, English is a language that is both easy and difficult. The easy part was that I got good
grades in the exams, and the difficult part was that I rarely tried to communicate with others
in English because I rarely had the opportunity to communicate with others to learn. But for
family reasons, I had to come to the United States. I moved from China to the United States
when I was in high school. At first, I thought that the English I learned in China would be the
same in the United States. However, this was not the case. When all my classmates around
me communicated with me in English, I couldn’t help but feel nervous and my mind went
blank instantly, so I was afraid to communicate with them. And in the eyes of my friends, I
was a shy, uncommunicative boy. But actually I am not, it’s just that I am afraid of
communicating in English and going to social events. When I communicate with people,
what goes through my mind is that if there are any grammatical mistakes in the sentences
and if I said it correctly, I check it in my head first, whereas when I use Chinese, I don’t have
that thought. Even though I have been so restrained, my friends still think that my English is
typical Chinese English. Chinese-English is when you pronounce consonants without vowels
after them, as well as unnatural intonation, among other reasons. Since I was not raised in
the United States, my English inevitably varies in pronunciation. Fluency, which is something
I really desire because I would love to be fluent in speaking, and fluent in messaging and
chatting. But one thing that I found comforting was that my friends and teachers never
discriminated against me in this way, but encouraged me to try more and be brave enough
to communicate with others in order to change my grammar and improve my English.

After I came to America, I tried to watch some TV shows to change my speaking
problem. I thought I could learn to speak English better in TV shows, and on the
recommendation of a friend, my first English enlightenment TV show, “Friends”. This show is
about a group of people who leave their hometown to work in a big city so they can live
together and have some interesting things happen. The purpose of this TV show is “. When
you are far from home and have no family around you, your friends are your family” touched
me deeply. It made me fully aware of the importance of learning languages. Because in
society, you need to communicate in order to meet more friends. And, since I want to live
and develop in the U.S. in the future, English has become a necessary goal for me to learn
every day.
I think the most important thing to learn English is Vocabulary. I think the first step in
learning English is to learn more vocabulary. The more vocabulary you have, the better your
reading and writing skills will be. Only when you have more vocabulary can you read and
listen. Conversely, practical activities and communicative skills such as listening, speaking,
reading, and writing become empty talk. Therefore, all English skills are inseparable from the
accumulation and use of vocabulary, and vocabulary plays an important role in the teaching
of English. I look up some new vocabulary on the Internet every day, and in the process of
doing so, I also review the vocabulary I have learned before so as not to forget it. There is an
old Chinese saying: ” A drop of water penetrates a stone”, which means that if you have
perseverance, through your own efforts and diligence, you will reap the rewards. That’s why
I do half an hour of vocabulary study every day. It’s not a lot of time, but I think if I study
every day, it will help me a lot to improve my English.
English became an indispensable part of me. English has brought me many things.
Friendships, business, hiking, etc. I hope I can continue studying for a long time and discover
